The High & Dry is a classic self-serve laundry with a red-tiled floor, a double bank of coin-fed washers along the middle, and banks of dryers along the outer walls. Folding tables cap each end of the row, with another couple on either side of the entry. Some plastic formed chairs are parked along scant bits of wall left without a piece of machinery in front of it. All day and night, there’s at least one dryer spin-spin-spinning, the round portal showing off clothes in the interior going around and around.

There’s a wall dispenser of pods of detergents, unscented and scented, as well as vended packets of dryer sheets and more pricey and eco-friendly wool felt dryer balls. It smells like fresh spring scent in here, like clean cotton and tidy things. A little booth off to the side is sometimes occupied by an attendant to give change and make sure no one smashes up the place, but more often than not, it’s empty and one has only the questionably reliable ‘QUARTERS HERE’ machine that eats about every other $5 bill you shove into it.
